Cumbernauld’s 2012 Gala Day took it to a whole new level, with a bigger than ever turnout estimated.

Taking place between 11am and 4.30pm last Saturday (14th July), the Cumbernauld Gala Day was officially opened by Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East MP Gregg McClymont and Cumbernauld Community Forum Chair Billy Lees after the crowing of Gala Day Queen Heather MacQueen.

Following her crowning Cumbernauld Media’s Scott Campbell caught up with Heather and asked how it felt to be Cumbernauld Gala Day Queen.

“It’s an honour to be Gala Queen because not many people get the chance,” Ms MacQueen commented. “It just feels like a fairy tale,  everybody has been so nice and it just feels like because everybody has come out to see it, it feels like an important part of Cumbernauld,” she added.

Later that day, Cumbernauld Media then caught up with Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East’s MP Gregg McClymont and asked how it felt to crown the Gala Queen and open the 2012 festivities.

“It was very nice. As you will know I did the job of passing the crown to Billy Lees, the Chair of the Forum, who did the actual crowning. But, it’s a great privilege to be able to be involved in such an important event.”

Following the crowning, act after act took to the main stage, in the Town Hall car park, to show off their talents.

The first act was Bill Penn, singing country songs, before the parade and crowing, followed by dance group Blok, then Indian dance group Miss Punjabis, followed by Highland dance group McDonald School of Dancing, Jazz music by Janine Capaldi, Freestyle dancers Steps Ahead, dancer Bernadette Sloan, Acapulco singer Antonia Sobieraj, Street Dancers Dance Vibes, local band Nix, singer Ezme Boyd and then John King stood in for Billy Lees to deliver the closing remarks to the Gala Day.

Talking to Cumbernauld Media, Laura Wallace, Cumbernauld Gala Day Co-ordinator said: “The 2012 Gala Day went extremely well.

“Everything turned out fabulous and everybody had a fantastic time.

“It was another successful Gala Day,” Laura added.
